3G Mobiles in use while driving
24 June 2008
Using mobiles while driving is illegal in Australia - but motorist still continue to use their 3G mobiles while behind the wheel. As 3G network coverage expands in Australia, this will allow drivers to use different features of their mobiles which may distract them further.
Drivers using mobiles make up nearly half of all car accidents. Drivers distracted by calls or sending text messages decrease their reaction times, allowing more accidents to happen.
The use of 3G mobiles with hands free devices is allowed in Australia. However, there is little proof that hands free mobiles decreases the risk of an accident occurring as drivers are still distracted by conversations. Studies have shown that using mobiles while driving increases the risk of an accident occurring four times higher than drivers not using mobiles.
If your 3G mobile phone rings while you're driving, it is preferred that you pull over to the side of the road to take the call, or simply ignore it and call back when you've finished driving. If you are using 3G mobiles with hands free devices, try to keep the phone calls brief. Don't use the other features of your 3G mobiles when driving - save it until you stop.
Not using your 3G mobiles on the road will help reduce accidents. Consider your own safety and the safety of others when driving and don't use your 3G mobiles when driving.
